Volunteers and local youth cut lawns for free for the elderly, disabled veterans and single moms

Rodney Smith Jr. of Huntsville, Alabama, was driving home one day during the summer of 2015 and saw an elderly man struggling to cut his lawn.  Rodney stopped to help and an idea was born.

Rodney began recruiting local youths to help, and his group of kid volunteers currently numbers over 60.  They cut lawns for free for the elderly, disabled veterans, and single moms.  The response has been overwhelming from both the youth who participate in the program, and those who receive the free lawn services.  “The kids are so excited, they call and say ‘please save my spot this weekend,’ ” says Rodney.   Donations have paid for gas, and the company, Briggs and Stratton, has contributed lawnmowers and weed eaters.

Rodney views his mission as being a mentor to young men and women, ages 7 to 17, and to encourage kids to get out there and give back to their community.  Making a difference in one's community can take a variety of forms, even if means simply mowing an elderly person’s lawn for free!

Let the good news brighten your day!

Miami Marlins volunteer in the community

  • Published in Sports

The Miami Marlins are hitting home runs in the community - Yes I know that is such a cliche statement, but I had to do it :)  When the Marlins broke ground on their new park in Miami, Florida, they created a Marlins Ayudan (Spanish for "help") team to do work in the community.

This Ayudan team, also called the "blue shirts" is working wonders in the community.  In 2012, they donated over $1.2 million and have clocked in over 5,000 hours in community service!!!  Over they years, they estimate that 100,000 people have been helped by the program.

In October 2012, over 200 members of the Marlins staff went to Miami Edison Middle School to give an entire day of service which included painting, gardening, and working with the kids.  “Our hope is that the kids realize the importance of education and learning lessons.”, said Marlins president David Samson.

They even donated $10,000 to the school's Red Raiders Room which is a collection of games and computers that students can use if they are doing well.  The kids were of course ecstatic :)

Keep up the good work and spreading the Good News!!

NYC Marathon runners help Hurricane Sandy victims after race cancellation

  • Published in Sports

What do 40,000 marathon runners do when their race is cancelled? This was the question that many were asking when the long anticipated NYC marathon was cancelled due to Hurricane Sandy. The hurricane left millions without power and heat during a time of year when the temperature has started dropping.

The race is a big deal for New York City. It brings in $340 million for the city and raises $24 million for charity. The mayor decided to cancel the race to allow the city to concentrate on relief efforts for those affected by the storm. Hundreds of police officers and firefighters which would have been working on closing streets for the marathon can now help the victims.

The runners made the best of the cancellation. Some decided to still run an alternate route. They organized a Facebook page called “Run Anyway NY” to organize a 4 lap run around Central Park which equates to the 26.2 miles! Wow, Central Park is huge :). Other runners decided to volunteer on Staten Island helping victims and cleaning up debris.

Meb Keflezighi, the 2009 marathon champion, stated: "I want to work with somebody. I don't mind going to Staten Island (which was greatly affected by the storm.) If I cannot run, I want to be positive. Or go to Central Park and let the runners know it's OK. I don't know. It's my first Sunday off in many years. How can I help?"

All of the runners really made a positive impact. The people of NYC and the world will not forget this selfless act. This is without a doubt some GREAT news!

Peace & Love,

Jon
