It has been 84 years since Margaret Harris last voted in a presidential election. Kentucky Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes and Mercer County Clerk Chris Horn have helped the 105 year old register to vote in the 2012 presidential election.
Margaret was born in 1906 which is 14 years before women were even allowed to vote! The only time she voted was in the 1928 election which she said was a very proud moment. Harris and her family and incredibly proud that she is able to vote this year.
Grimes was honored to help Margaret vote. “Every vote counts, and no one who is eligible to vote should be prevented from doing so because of factors related to age, disability or illness,” Grimes said. “I know how important it is and was to my grandmothers to vote, and I know they are proud that I was able to help Mrs. Harris register and educate her about absentee voting.”
Margaret credits her longevity to God, family, and work. She lives in Harrodsberg, which is Kentucky’s oldest city and she lives on the oldest street in the city! Margaret has over 50 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren, and almost 20 great-great-grandchildren all of whom speak highly about her home cooking 🙂
Margaret is showing the world that you are never too old to have an equal voice!
